From our local weather column, written by the good folks at the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium:
"On this date in 1857, following a day where temperatures did not rise above -16F in Burlington and -23F in Craftsbury, reading reached their lowest figures of the 19th century. Newspapers carried reports of -50F in Montpelier and -44F in Norwich. Other extremes may have been missed because many thermometers were mercury which freezes at -40F."
Stay warm. Here in Vermont we are just about half-way through winter, traditionally the wood pile should be only half used by January 28th. Rain is predicted tomorrow but we could easily see subzero temperatures again in early February!
