How much experience before taking Level I Certification

I have been using a Ti30 off and on since January. I've captured images of electrical panels and building envelopes. I'm confident in my ability to get a well focused image. I have also been practicing with the software to try and understand what the images mean. I'm looking forward to taking the Level I certification and want to get the most out of it that I can. I know that often means plenty of experience in the equipment beforehand. I was wondering how much experience or what knowledge level I should have before committing to that expense. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Richard

In my opinion do not wait. You can teach yourself the equipment and the software but the training brings it all together. Do not forget to take the ASNT exams at the end of the training. Well worth it and it saves going back.

This is a great field, you will have no regrets. The course will tell you what IR cameras can't do as well. That fact is as important as what they can't do.The IR field is what you make it.Remember this is a tool your background in the subject you are shooting has as much weight as the camera. You had to start with a hand powered screw driver first before you could move up to a powered one.My point is your confidence in the subject  is key -you can learn about the gear as you go.

Good luck you will not regret this great field or the expence.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try and get to the Level I training this fall. I bought the Fourth Edition of Manual of Low-slope Roof Systems and it is a great book in understanding roofing. Thermography is a great field and I can't wait to learn more.

    Richard,

I'm looking forward to meeting you in the fall. Anyone who thinks the 4th Edition of that book is a great read is my kind of guy! I've had it in my library for years. Don't forget we also have a number of "white papers" on our main website that should provide useful reading:

The "white papers" are a terrific resource. I've presented on thermal imaging to a group of home inspectors and the Building Owners and Maintenance Association. My PowerPoint presentation was 95% images and pictures. When asked for more information, I handed them your "Nondestructive Testing of Building Envelope Systems Using Infrared Thermography" paper. I received great feedback from it. I also watched the webinar on Low-Sloped Roofs, very informative. I plan on watching a few more in the coming months.

    John,

When I opened White Papers on your site it only opened five.  Is there a way to access archived white papers?  I am interested in your paper on Nondestrive Testing of Building Envelope Systems.......

     Thanks,

    Bill,

We are currently working on the archive section of the Whitepapers. You should see it by around the end of this month.
