IR Camera from Usa to Europe

    Hi there,

and thank you for this forum, its interesting.

I am interested to buy new or second hand IR camera for building diagnostic and I have noticed those cameras are much cheaper(thanks to USD/EUR rate) in USA than in here, Europe/Finland. Does it work here if its bought from USA. What do you think?

Of course electric systems are different so I have to use adaptor but is there anything else?

    Thanks,

    Salei

Most of them will work. But you will find it difficult to buy one in the US to ship back to Europe. Often the detectors used in US versions of the cameras use a different detector, and most of the time there are licencing issues. These are difficult issues to get around, it is easier to buy one from Europe.

Of course it is easier but not cheaper...

What you mean about different detector?  Can you give practical example?

I agreed that it could be hard to buy new one but if I buy used from Ebay and ship that one... I cant see why that should not be possible. Where do I need those licenses? For report application?

    Thank you for reply

Infrared Cameras need Export License from US Commerce or State department (Depending on Detector Type) and it is not advisable to violate any of these US Law's. Heavy penalties and personal Trade sanctions.

There are some  exemptions but I wouldn't do anything without the advise from Commerce or State department.

When a Camera is sold originally in to the US the US Export restriction will be valid so it doesn't matter where the Detector is made if it is to be re-exported.

Bottom Line is - that it isn't worth taking a chance.

Many US manufacturers produce versions of cameras with 9 Hz frame rate for export, where "US versions" have 30 Hz. From talking to the array manufacturers, I think most of the time they are the same detector with higher frame rate disabled at the interface to the detector.

I'd advise extreme caution if looking for IR cameras on ebay, there are a large number of scam auctions using zero-feedback accounts or using hi-jacked accounts.

You are right about the 9/30Hz (there are still export restrictions depending on Country and use of the Camera) but if someone buy a used Product from the US and try to bring it to Europe just read the post

Watch who you sell your camera to

That should explain and discourage anyone from not making sure the i's are dottet and t's crossed.
