    New kid with question

I'm in the process of reading "COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO THERMAL IMAGING"....... in appendix -c John you talk about this cd-rom.... where would I find this and has it been updated since the printing of this book?...... I'm looking for a resource library that I can fall back on for quick reference......I'm finding the book in some areas about 20 feet above my head...... but I keep reading......I have sign up for the level 1 class here in Indy in Oct. can't wait to learn more of this industry.  I'm a twenty year veteran of the fire department, looking to retire in the next 2-3 years if I can get this business off and running.  Thanks for all the help.......!

Art, Welcome the the Thermal World! The book you've started with it pretty challenging! Don't be discouraged. Drop me an email and I can make some other suggestions too. The CD that is referenced is a selection of papers that were presented at the industry conference, Thermosense, over a number of years. It is available from http://spie.org/x648.html?product_id=339235. A later CD has more papers, some of which may be outside your areas of interest: http://spie.org/x648.html?product_id=516444.

I'd also suggest you download the whitepapers we offer at http://www.thesnellgroup.com/WhitePapers.aspx as well as our newsletter, a tremendous resource, at http://www.thesnellgroup.com/Content/ThinkThermally.aspx. We also have Proceedings from our conference, Thermal Solutions, available on CD; many of these papers would be of interest to you and you can contact us directly for details on how to purchase these. There are also some great recorded and live webinars that can get you primed and ready for Level I!

We look forward to meeting you in Indy.

    Re: New kid with question

John thanks for the info.... I have sign up for your news letter     and in fact Im reading one of the white papers tonight..."testing building envelope.... Question....you talk about masonry walls.... I have seen several reference to type of inspection in other postings .. my question is do you want to see lines or the bar look in your photo, .in this article you can see the lower side that looks uniform.....and the rest of the building solid..or  is the lines in the lower part missing grout....... there is a building that is being built near my home I want to shoot...but it has been raining for two days.. I just got a I60 flir camera, and im ready to go play with it.....I just wanted to know what Im looking at when I do........ I can't wait until Octuber.... Im canceling a bird hunting trip to attend this class....Crying thanks....... Art

Excellent, and I'm sure the birds will be happy! The image (attached) taken by a great thermographer, Phil McMullen, shows the grouted cells in the lower portions (the "bars"). Unbelievably, the rest of the wall is ungrouted!

You can look at structures like this either day or night, even if the building is unfinished, but probably best not to do it when the walls are wet with rain. What is needed is a CHANGE in temperature across the wall and the grouted and ungrouted cells change at different times.

Have fun with that i60! Maybe you can even look at the birds with it!
