    Sorry wrong button.....

I had a question asked to me:  Will FIR work underwater?

After some online research I have found that the Navy has done research finding that some spectrum's can be seen in NIR , MIR and FIR, but no definite yes or no's.

    Re: Soggy question

Near-IR, yes, with an illuminator. Midwave-IR and Longwave-IR (FIR), no go. Water is very absorbing of these wavebands even when just a few molecules thick. View a thermal image of a pan of water and insert you hand into the water: it disappears! Interestingly, however, your hand, if just under the surface, will warm cool water in really neat convective patterns.
