Anyone using a netbook PC?

    Anyone using a netbook PC?

Often when I am in the field, I often find that my camera is filling up with thermograms (it can only hold 100). I then have to either dash home during my lunch break or stop when the camera is full.  I would like to buy one the small netbook computers so that I can load Quickview and download the thermograms while at the client's site.

These little computers weigh under 3 lbs and start at $295.  They have their own category - they care called netbooks.

I wonder if anyone is using one of these netbooks and specifically is anyone using them with Quickview or even the full blown Reporter Pro? If you are I would be interested in your experience.

     Thanks

    Jim

Hi Jim.  I own a netbook (Asus eeepc 801).

This machine matches my Dell full size laptop for speed and memory, however the native screen resolution is non-standard. While this doesn't degrade display quality in my case, many graphics-intense applications require a higher setting.

When I want to use Smartview on my netbook, I can set graphics settings to emulate the higher resolution monitor, however I then have to use scroll keys to see parts of the display that are outside the viewable part of the screen.  Even stuff like the bottom tool bar and mouse pointer can disappear out of view.

Apart from that, things like MS Office, etc.  all seem to work fine.  That said, when I'm on site with my imager and plan to work on things there, I take my Dell, not the netbook.

    Cheers

    Hi Jim

What type of camera are you using? I use a FLIR B60 and it has a USB port on it that will allow me (I believe) to connect a flash drive for storing thermograms . Cheaper and more portable than a PC.

    Hi Larry,

I have the EX320.  No such USB port. No flash drive. That is the crux of the problem.

Have you looked at something like the Delkin PicturePAD which is both a card reader and a battery operated, portable storage device/hard drive? I've not used this brand or others but have seen reviews in photo magazines over the past several years. No USB required!

Ok so nix the USB route on another note my wife purchased the Acer Aspire One and loves it, it is affordable, portable and works like a charm.

I am currently evaluating with Home Inspector Pro to accompany me on inspections.
