Brian, are you the same guy that posted on InterNACHI regarding this unit?

I think the guys are trying to reach you with a few questions.....

Where in Canada are you located?

Re: Getting back to the RAZ-IR, SPI seems to be the real ghost

Hey Brian ! I live in Southwestern Ontario and are seriously thinking of getting into thermal imaging for homeowners working with home inspectors and contractors. Just wondering what type of business you do and how you charge ?

    Terry,

I work for a utility company and most of the costs for the IR services are picked up through the utility rates to the customers.  We only charge $100  directly to the customer.

Re: Getting back to the RAZ-IR, SPI seems to be the real ghost

I bought one... tried it for a few days and sent it back....

A couple of comments about WHY i sent it back...

    1. The file format is imcompatable with just about everything, which makes it very hard to manipulate images in the field.  You MUST use their software to pre-process the images and then export them in a more standard format.
This was the killer for Me.  I needed something that would talk JPG so I could print them in the field with a minimum of fuss.
    2. It felt cheap.  I didn't think it would last long in my truck, and definitely wouldn't survive a drop...
I ended up getting a more expensive camera that has a 6' drop rating...
    3. Images were a bit fuzzy even for the resolution....
    4. Display was hard to see and thus work with...

I ended up with a FLUKE TIR1... More money but in a totally different league of instrument, software, support and the rest.

Depending on what you are going to use it for... Look at the flukes.  They are real industrial tools, supported by real people who use the instrument in the field regularly... Different world from the software geeks at ZAR-IR.  The RAZ-IR is good for somethings, but it was not for me or my company.

Since FLUKE and some others lowered the price on their entry level cameras, the RAZ-IR doesn't look so good...

    Bob,

also owning one, I agree with everything you say, apart from the images being fuzzy.

These cameras are certainly not built to be rugged, but in my experience the images are excellent given the resolution of the sensor.

Perhaps there was some fault with the one you bought?

Re: Getting back to the RAZ-IR, SPI seems to be the real ghost

I think that once I got it I realized just how low res it was...

I just expected more than what it could do...sometime you just need to see it and play with it to see...

RAZ-IR was good about returns I will give them that... they know they are not for everyone...  they refunded my money as quick as they taken my money... bravo on that...

    Brian,

Do you have contact info for your "buddy in Michigan" as to where he rents for $100 a month?  I'm not getting quotes anywhere near there.  Thanks for your post and comments.  My budget is below that $5k mark and we want to justify the purchase first with a few months leasing.

Re: Getting back to the RAZ-IR, SPI seems to be the real ghost

    Bob,

Since I have been working with ICI as web administrator, I can confirm that everything you have said about the Raz-IR is true.  We have had a few trainees in class with these, and they also complained that support after the sale was nearly non existant.

SPI as far as internet goes, Their web sites are not built for humans, 1 page has over 5000 words - this is to spam "keywords" for internet rankings.  They have an award they gave to themself "signed Jim Santana" - They feature a lot of infrared images, 90% of them are taken with Flir, FLuke, ICI, or Mikron's.  They rely completely on internet sales so ranking high regardless of content seems to be their goal.  Though we did get a good laugh at their customer review they did themselves as well as the "SPI" girl models they had.  Everything ICI does, they copycat on the internet.  Fortunately for us, they do not see the true design behind the web sites.

I would have to strongly advise against a Raz-IR because in the past 2 years working in thermography I have never heard anything good about these cameras - not even their price - Want a sub 5k camera, we have a ToughCam EL that blows the Raz-IR out of the water in all aspects.  And it feels "rugged" not "cheap".

     Just my 2 cents :)

The Mikron 7816 was recently upgraded to an increased thermal sensitivity of 70mk at 30 degrees C and costs 7995.00.  Hope that helps.
